Something everyone should know is how to properly burn your candles! Sounds simple enough, have matches - start fire! Well, the truth is, too much fire can cause a lot of damage. So here's what we suggest.
Always make sure your wick is trimmed to 1/8" before lighting your candle. Too big of a flame from an untrimmed wick can cause excess soot and make your container candle too hot. The glass can crack or even shatter if the flame is too big.
Always keep your candle on a heat safe surface. Candle glass can get very hot - never try to move a candle while it is burning. A good idea is to use a trivet under any candle glass or a candle holder for a votive candle that can keep the glass up so air can circulate around the bottom of the container.
If you are burning a pillar candle, they do not need to be burned in glass, but always keep them on a heat safe dish that has an edge - just in case the wax leaks out the side.
Burn your candles 1hour per inch in diameter. If you have a standard apothecary jar it will be a 4" diameter jar. This candle should be burned for 4 hours the first time. A standard 3" pillar should be burned for 3 hours and blown out. While the wax is still warm, cup your hands around the warm wax at the top to fold it in toward itself. This wax will then be consumed as the candle burns and leave less behind!
Be sure to stop burning your candles when you have 1/2" of wax left in the container. Candle warmers are a great use of this remaining bit of wax! Place the candle jar on a certified candle warmer and you will quickly release fragrance into the room! When there is no longer any scent left, dispose of the candle wax in a garbage can - NEVER pour wax down the sink or in the commode.
